On Tuesday, October 13 a college student from Catawba College was killed in a crash on Interstate 85.
According to Salisbury Troopers, the accident happened at around 8.30 p.m. when 21 year old Taylor Chafatelli of Elon was travelling south on I 85 near Randolph Street in Thomasville, N.C. Chafatelli was a junior communication arts major and was travelling back to Catawba College in Salisbury. She was driving a 2008 Cobalt and using the left lane to pass a tractor trailer when she collided with the tractor trailer’s front wheel causing her vehicle to go under the truck, veer across the roadway and crash into a guardrail. Chafatelli, who was not wearing a seat belt was thrown from her vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The truck driver was not injured.
Chafatelli’s friend, Nicole Slate stated that her death had been very hard on everyone at Catawba. School leaders are planning a memorial service and have also set up a memorial book for students to share their condolences.
Investigators are still working to identify the exact circumstances surrounding this incident.
